Deafblind Interpreting
Unlocking Accessible Communication for the Deafblind Community
Deafblind Interpreter Guides
At DBE, we're dedicated to facilitating seamless communication for Deafblind people nationwide. Our skilled interpreters are encouraged to employ the Total Communication approach which means that, if necessary, they will use multiple communication methods tailored to meet diverse individual needs and preferences. This ensures full comprehension within any information exchanges or conversations with a focus on clarity, accuracy and that any information produced by the interpreter is fully received by the Deafblind person.
Our interpreters are highly proficient in the following communication methods;
What are these communication methods?
Block Letters
The block alphabet is a tactile form of communication in which words are spelled out on to the palm of the deafblind person's hand.
The Deafblind Manual Alphabet
The deafblind manual alphabet is a tactile form of communication in which words are spelled out onto a deafblind person's hand. Each letter is denoted by a particular sign or place on the hand.
Hands-on signing:
A BSL interpreter who is able to sign with the hands of the person they are interpreting for placed over their hands, so that they can feel the signs being used. A type of communication support which may be needed by a person who is deafblind.
Visual frame signing:
A BSL interpreter who is able to use BSL within the visual field of the person with restricted vision. A type of communication support which may be needed by a person who is deafblind
DBE believes in the nationally recongised Signature qualifications and is a recognised interpreter agency.

We are subcontracted by many BSL agencies such as Language Empire, DA Languages, Language Line, Language Shop, and Cintra for our ongoing high standards in deafblind communication.
